چکیده
On the cover: Structures of antigen binding fragments (Fabs) of lambda versus kappa anti-HIV envelope antibodies. Structures of Fab were superimposed based on light chain variable domain and colored green/yellow (lambda antibodies) and magenta/cyan (kappa antibodies) for light/ heavy chain, respectively. The complementary region first and third of light chain (CDR L1 and CDR L3) are highlighted and colored: CDR L1dark blue/light blue for lambda/ kappa antibodies and CDR L3-grey/black for of lambda/ kappa antibodies (see Sajadi et al, pp 156–64). Relationship Between Blood Concentrations of Hepcidin and Anemia Severity, Mycobacterial Burden, and Mortality Among Patients With HIV-Associated Tuberculosis
BACKGROUND Anemia is very common in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-associated tuberculosis, and hepcidin may be key in mediating this. We explored the relationship between blood hepcidin concentrations and anemia severity, mycobacterial burden and mortality in patients with HIV-associated tuberculosis. METHODS Consecutive unselected HIV-infected adults in South Africa were s...
متن کاملInto the matrix: regulation of the iron regulatory hormone hepcidin by matriptase-2.
Matriptase-2 is a recently identified membrane-bound, cell-surface serine protease expressed primarily in liver. Mutations in matriptase-2 in mice and humans cause iron-deficiency anemia that responds poorly to iron therapy. The poor response results from an inability to decrease hepcidin production during iron deficiency. Cell culture studies reveal that matriptase-2 inhibits hepcidin inductio...
متن کاملA novel treatment of anemia of inflammation.
In this issue of Blood, van Eijk et al investigate a synthetic compound that inhibits the iron-regulatory hormone hepcidin to fight anemia of inflammation in human endotoxemia. Anemia is one of the major public health burdens. TheWorldHealth Organization estimates the prevalence of anemia at 2 billion people worldwide. Prevalence of anemia in 2010 was estimated at 32.9% in a systemic analysis o...
متن کاملHepcidin deficiency and iron deficiency do not alter tuberculosis susceptibility in a murine M.tb infection model
Tuberculosis (TB), caused by the macrophage-tropic pathogen Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb) is a highly prevalent infectious disease. Since an immune correlate of protection or effective vaccine have yet to be found, continued research into host-pathogen interactions is important. Previous literature reports links between host iron status and disease outcome for many infections, including TB....
متن کاملHepcidin induction by transgenic overexpression of Hfe does not require the Hfe cytoplasmic tail, but does require hemojuvelin.
Mutations in HFE cause the most common form of hereditary hemochromatosis (HH). We previously showed that liver-specific, transgenic overexpression of murine Hfe stimulates production of the iron regulatory hormone hepcidin. Here, we developed several additional transgenic mouse strains to further interrogate the structural basis of HFE function in the pathophysiology of HH. We hypothesized tha...
